Fight breaks out at Indian wedding reception over shortage of food

A wedding reception in India turned to a massive brawl after the dessert bar ran out of rasgullas.

When relatives from the bride’s side complained that the rasgullas had run out at the food counter in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, the groom’s family took offence.

Tensions quickly escalated, and soon, CCTV footage caught guests punching each other and throwing chairs.

Suresh Prasad, the bride’s father, explained that tensions had already escalated when the groom’s side began demanding an additional dowry during the wedding rituals.

He added: ‘After this, the groom’s side started beating us, injuring several people from our side. We have filed a complaint at the Bodh Gaya police station.’

Police confirmed multiple injuries from both sides in the scuffle. The groom’s father, Mahendra Prasad, later clarified that the brawl started over a shortage of rasgullas, not the dowry.

Mahendra said: ‘The dispute over the rasgullas escalated to the point where the bride’s side called off the wedding.

‘They’re claiming additional dowry demands, which is false. We still want our son to marry the same girl, but the bride’s side refuses.’

The groom’s mother, Munni Devi, also accused the bride’s family of taking jewellery she had brought as gifts during the fight. She also said that the groom’s side had covered the hotel booking costs.

Officers are investigating the incident.

In traditional Indian weddings, the bride’s family typically covers most expenses, including the main ceremony, reception, and the bride’s attire.

However, modern practices are shifting towards more equal cost-sharing between families, with some couples opting to pay for their weddings.

The disagreement started when some of the groom’s relatives demanded that the dishes be served immediately. The bride’s father, responsible for catering, was angered by the accusations of poor culinary skills.

The argument spiralled out of control, leading to punches being thrown at the reception in Bijnor district, Uttar Pradesh, on February 20.

Police said several attendees were seriously injured and had to be taken to the hospital.
