In a bid to fill vacancies arising from the expiration of tenures, President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners (RECs) to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who announced the nominations in a statement issued on Friday, said Mustapha Aliu will replace Abdullahi Zuru as the national commissioner representing the north-west, while Bashir Umar will replace Muhammad Adamu as the north-central representative.
Tinubu also nominated the present resident electoral commissioner in Osun state, Oluwatoyin Babalola, as the national commissioner for the south-west.
She is expected to replace Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure will elapse on October 24.
Tinubu reappointed Bala Bila as the national commissioner for the north-east.
For the resident electoral commissioner positions, the President nominated a retired permanent secretary, Samuel Akinleye, to represent Ekiti, and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi to replace Saidu Babura from Jigawa.
President Tinubu urged the senate to scrutinise the nominees’ credentials and confirm them ahead of the general election scheduled for January next year.
