The implementation of the 2025 budget will.now extend to December 31, 2026 after President Bola Tinubu signed into law the amended 2025 appropriation (amendment) (No.4) bill,.
The budget was initially billed to elapse September 30 but after appending his signature to the amended bill, the life circle has been stretched by three months.
In a statement issued on Wednesday,
Special adviser on information and strategy to the president, Bayo Onanuga said that the assent followed the “swift passage” of the amended bill by both the senate and the house of representatives on Tuesday.
Onanuga stated that with the extension ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) now have more time to finish ongoing capital projects.
“It ensures that funds already appropriated are fully put to work for Nigerians, without disrupting critical programmes,” the statement reads.
“The President commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their prompt consideration of the bill, a further sign of the cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature in the service of the nation.”
Speaking during the passage of the bill at plenary on Tuesdayy, senate leader,
Opeyemi Bamidele, had said the extension would allow the MDAs more time to complete capital projects for which funds had already been appropriated and released.
Bamidele stated that the procurement, contract execution, mobilisation, certification of works and payment processes could affect the implementation of projects within the existing timeframe.
To put things in perspective, this is the fourth time the national assembly has shifted the deadline for implementing the 2025 capital budget.
JESNews reports that on December 23, 2025, lawmakers approved a three-month extension of the capital budget, moving the deadline to March 31, 2026, after repealing and re-enacting the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts.
On March 31, the National Assembly prolonged the implementation deadline from March 31 to June 30.
On June 15, the Senate and House of Representatives again extended the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30.
